The Quinn Marie: Quinn's Story

With a relatively uneventful pregnancy, Quinn’s mom, Melissa, was sent to the hospital on September 16th at 36 weeks and 5 days to be induced as Quinn’s bio physical markers were low.  After being induced and nearly 13 hours in the hospital it was discovered that Melissa was bleeding and they lost Quinn’s heart beat on the monitor.  She was taken for an emergency C-section and Quinn was born on September 17th at 1:34 AM.  She came out not breathing and without a heartbeat.  After 20 minutes, they were able to get her heart started again.  She was diagnosed with severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), placed on a cooling blanket to prevent further brain injury and transferred to Johns Hopkins for additional testing and treatment.  Upon arrival she was breathing on her own, opening her eyes, had sparks of brain activity and had limited movement.  Melissa was also transferred and was able to hold her for the first time that evening.  The feeling of cuddling your baby for the first time, shadowed by the uncertainty if she would survive.  Overnight Quinn declined.  She suffered seizures, a massive brain bleed, required meds round the clock, her brain activity ceased and her pupils became fixed.  After several meetings with the neurology team, it was determined that there was nothing more that could be done.  It was time to make as many memories as possible and let Quinn pass peacefully.  Quinn left this world in her parents arms at 3:03 PM on September 19th, 2020.  She fought with dignity and grace and will be forever remembered as a warrior princess.

At the request of Quinn's mom, proceeds will go to Johns Hopkins Bayview NICU.  She wants to remind NICU parents that they are not alone, keep fighting and stay strong.  Be gentle with yourself.
